Davion Washington has had a touch-and-go relationship with photography since he was a kid taking snapshots of family and friends, but it wasn’t until about 4 or 5 years ago that he began thinking about photography as a profession and lifestyle. And it all goes back to movie posters.

Davion has been a longtime fan of Hollywood movies, but it was the movie posters that got his attention most. What amazed him was how the artist (or photographer) who created the poster image was able to tell an entire story in a single image. As an emerging digital artist, this is the sort of challenge that got his juices flowing.

Washington is currently wrapping up his Associate Degree in Commercial Photography at the College of Southern Nevada. During his tenure at CSN he has managed to greatly refine his lighting skills, which along with his skills in Photoshop is going to be his meal ticket moving forward.

Prior to entering the photography program at Southern Nevada, Davion’s lighting experience was limited to speed lights and whatever light was available. Not so today.

Aman Shakya’s love affair with photography began back in 2012 while going for a degree in Information Technologies at a school in Thailand. He quickly noted he had an eye for form, texture, and composition, and most tellingly – he was getting lots of positive feedback from friends and others who saw his photographs. Photography enabled him to interpret the world around him in a way that greatly appealed to him. Before long it was ‘Bye-bye IT’.

Shakya was wise enough to understand if he wanted to shoot full time he had to have a better handle on lighting so he started looking around for a good school. Well-staffed art schools offering degrees in photography are non-existent in his native Nepal and the choices in Thailand weren’t much better. While searching for alternative choices the name SCAD (Savannah College of Art & Design) popped up frequently, and after careful consideration he decided to give it a go.

Rising Light is an article series highlighting promising photography students from all over the world. This month we introduce Carlos Eric Lopez, a Los Angeles based photographer who graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the world famous Brooks Institute of Photography.

After a 70-year run, Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara was shut down by their mother company Green Planet last year, upending the lives and career paths of a number of young aspiring photographers and filmmakers. With a scant 4-days’ notice the entire student body had to pack up and ship out, all while trying figure out their next moves.

What could have been a disastrous situation was miraculously flipped into a win-win situation when Mount Saint Mary’s University, a well-established film school, agreed to allow Brooks students to finish their degrees at Mount Saint Mary’s University and graduate with a Brooks Institute degree.

Rising Light is an article series highlighting promising photography students from all over the world. This month we introduce Preston Ray at School of Visual Communication at Ohio University.

The problem with growing up in Havre Montana is that despite an abundance of endless big skies and scenic landscapes, there’s a serious shortage of photography schools. Graphic design programs you can find. Photography departments? Zilch. Odd as it may sound if it wasn’t for the fact Preston Ray fell in love with a girl from Romania he might not have ever discovered the wonders of studio lighting.

Rising Light is an article series highlighting promising photography students from all over the world. This month we introduce Jonas Yuan at Academy of Arts University.

Some photographers are technicians, meaning they have the technique down pat but lack in the creative arena. Conversely, there are also a number of photographers who are creative but lack the technical skills required to take their imagery to higher levels.

Jonas Yuan is currently enrolled at the Academy of Arts University (AAU) in San Francisco, California. In a relatively short period of time Jonas Yuan has been able to fuse his skill sets as a technician with a keen sense of esthetics to create photographs that are well beyond the abilities of your average photo major. Then again, your average photo student didn’t sign up for classes because they needed to recharge their creative juices after shooting a sling of Blue Chip photography assignments in China.
