Matthew Jordan Smith has long used Profoto to get his signature lighting effects on his well-known portraiture. In a recent article he wrote for, Smith details which gear he uses and why.

Stating “there are no fast rules,” when it comes to lighting, Smith outlines some general guidelines which help formulate a unique approach to the gear he choses for each portrait based on sex, weight, eyes, skin texture, facial symmetry, etc.

Citing the Profoto Magnum Reflector, Softlight Reflector, and the 7 inch Grid Reflector as critical to achieving key lighting for his various sessions.
