TTL or manual?
With AirTTL, Profoto broke new ground in lighting, as the first to offer an automatic point and shoot mode that helps you get the perfect exposure faster and easier than ever before. With TTL you also get HSS which is a huge help when mastering ambient light on location. The lower cost D1 is available in manual mode only, while the B1X and D2 offer both TTL and manual mode with HSS.

Mains or battery-powered?
If you’re shooting frequently on location and outdoors the B1X is a smart choice. If you combine studio work with shooting on the sort of locations where you easily can plug into a wall the D1 or D2 are ideal.

How much power do I need?
If you’re shooting mainly in studio a 250Ws version is great for most shoots. The 500Ws is an excellent all-round option and a popular choice. The 1000Ws is great for shooting on location outside and when you need enough power to light a bigger area. The B1X and the D2 also have HSS that enables you to shape light even in broad daylight; because it’s powerful enough to overpower the sun.
