I like the mix of theory and practical in brief chunks. Simple and allows me to make notes to explore further topics (Butterfly Lighting as example). I think the minimalist studio approach and look also enhances the clean and foundational nature of the instruction.

I understand charging random people off the street but your customers have already earned it, you should not charge us.

the 3rd video was the only one you really needed. I don't feel like it was worth 25$, I was happy to watch it for free though. The price tag and what I got would make me very hesitant to purchase a more expensive course. I felt the information was great I just wouldn't feel good if I had to pay for it.

I thought my English was somewhat adequate, but the following question I do not quite get the meaning of "Which of these is a very effective method of using light sources in the background to determine your placement of lights?" Would you care to explain?

This tutorial about light was more informative than any other course I've taken. I now know why light does what it does, instead of just believing instructors when they say, "place your light here." Thank you for packing so much information into this short video. It took no time to watch and it fit in nicely into my busy schedule.

This tutorial is really good. I would like to mention here that distance between light source and the defuser material plays a major roll to change the size of penumbra as well as quality of light. If the defuser material is placed right in front of the small light source without keeping any gap, it will not change the size of light source and size of the penumbra will be small.

If you wanted to take this tutorial a step further and go really into the science of it I recommend inspiration from Mark Levoy's series of lectures on youtube. I think inverse square theory could've been covered in a lot more detail. I wish they had explained why when the light is moved closer the background fell darker, you could have talked about lighting fall off and how different sources will fall off quicker etc etc. Very useful video to show my students for sure, do you have a more advanced video in the pipeline?

The shape of the light is not enough to caracterize light; for instance a directionnal reflector or a softbox of the same shape are not going to impact the penumbra and most important, the texture of the subject (for instance the skin defects); the angular distribution of the direction of the light at each square inch of the surface of the source should also be teached as a fourth factor. This aspect is barely shown in lighting lessons.. hope you will take this in charge ;) thank you

Easy to understand and apply

When you work in portrait photography, the themes covered in the video are part of your knowledge. The message of the movie is very simple, but they must be fixed well in mind, the themes are fundamental, because when you have little time to run it is easier to make mistakes.

I love that their is enough humor to remain focused!

One of the 4 questions I could not answer because I didn't learn it properly, my bad (diff between short and broad light). And I think it was because in that lesson was a mixture of "how to use daylight and flash" and the pure effect the flash has.

Pretty basic info. Nothing wrong with the information, it was broken down for an entry level photographer in mind.

technical aspect is amazing, execution is somehow for kids, profoto is a premium brand, not a play ground. In some situations its funny but there's too much going on with unnecessary things. people don't have time for that, people want quick results, so if you would bring it to the point without playing around i would appreciate more.

I have concerns that the last bit for "It's Your Turn Now" where the background was strobing from black to white might not be good for those with epilepsy.

It would be more helpful, when the lighting shapes would not just get named but also the motivation of using them would get explained.

Very little real information for 25 euro! One can find much more on the internet for free. And I wonder if the law of inverse distance actually explains the effect of brighter backgound with longer distance ...

Not worth the price though all info was legit and well explained but 25 Euro is too much in my opinion. I still did enjoy the course a lot and learned.

IT is too basic for me

The explanation was concise and easily understood. It was very helpful with the backup tutorial on practical use.

If I had paid £19 for that I would be very very unhappy. Don't get me wrong I am a big fan of Profoto and have a fair bit of kit, but there are lots of free tutorials on YouTube which match this. It would be good advertising to let them out there free (or maybe to subscribers/users)

missed the penumbra light shape section

Loved the theoretical and the practical explanations and demonstrations. This is my first time watching something from Profoto but it will not be my last.

Excellent. To improve the course, clarify cornerstone 3. At first, you talk about the shape of the light. Round sun, round penumbra. Rectangular light box, rectangular penumbra. But Hanna's illustrations do not talk about shape. She talks about the size of the light source. The two ideas of shape and size are not contradictory, but they are not identical either. So, there is a disconnect. And you ignore the disconnect. You need to make the connection, so the gap goes away.

I think you should have talked about the inverse-square law. Otherwise it makes no sense that the background gets brighter when you put the light source further away from the subject. It is an amazing platform to learn new techniques from the best

You have missed (maybe intentionally) a key concept when talking about the size of the light. It should have been explained as "the APPARENT size of the light source" in respect to the subject. If you had placed the "big" softbox 100 meters away from the subject, it would have become a hard light because the apparent size would be small in respect to the subject. The way you left things to the viewer may lead to the misconception that a large softbox will always produce a soft light. Would you say the Sun makes a hard light because it is a small light source? The Sun is 100 times bigger than the Earth.

It was informative but too basic. I wanted to know more about the various types of modifiers such as umbrellas vs sofboxes and the different types and sizes of each modifier. Also white vs silver and see the contrast in the light between the 2 colors in various applications ( soft box, umbrellas and octabanks. Alsoin different settings such as daylight vs night.

It was a simple and wonderful lecture. I think it is difficult for beginners to shoot the studio, which is why the lighting. You have solved it for sure. It is wonderful.

Please include the loop lighting

The course was very informative, with precise and pinpoint explanations on all the techniques. However it did not clearly take account of subject placement in relation to the background (distance). Doesn’t that affect the amount of fall off the backdrop picks up as well, especially with the addition of a modifier like Softbox?

Simple and affective

Been studying on youtube but this course clarifies many questions i had

Most of it was good, but the first lesson regarding distance was wrong. When the light was moved closer the background was lighter but the subject was overexposed. It was only when the power of the light was reduced that the background became darker. The erroneous conclusion that was repeated several times was that bringing the light closer makes the background darker. I feel that this will only confuse photographers who are new to lighting.

The technical part was broken down and understandable to a layman. . .it is also very engaging. .. I wasn't bored at all

it is a good and fast course for people who want a quick grababout lighting, but would be better if there was more explanations on light positioning
