Getting that dazzling starburst effect right can bring a unique sparkle to your images. In this article, fashion photographer Lindsay Adler guides you through the art of transforming ordinary shots into shimmering masterpieces with the help of a star filter.

Step 1 - Style with sparkle

For the most noticeable star filter effects, you will need to style your subject with something very reflective. This could be glitter makeup, gemstones on a dress, metallic jewelry, etc. The shinier the surface, the more dramatic the star filter effect will be.

Step 2 - Use hard light

Hard light is essential for achieving pronounced starburst effects. Suggested modifiers include Profoto Magnum Reflector, Profoto Grids, ProFresnel Spot or even a bare strobe. While a bare strobe certainly can create a lot of highlights and reflections, using grids or other modifiers will give you a bit more control over the spill of light, and therefore more shadows/contrast to work with.

Step 3 - Choose a star filter

Start by trying a 4-point or cross screen star filter. These are typically the least expensive options and are very sensitive to reflections. As the name suggests, they create a 4-point star from any specular highlight or defined point of reflection. If you want to explore different types of star shapes in the future, it's good to know that filter brands often have photo samples on their site (e.g.: North Star, Hollywood Star, 6-point etc.).
