  • Time will tell: Strength and Nuanced Power

    I shoot a lot of models including on location and have used Profoto for many years. I shoot in a very hot environment, which Profoto gear does not enjoy and will always shelter the flashes from the sun when shooting outside. This helps prevent overheating but still can’t stop the tube itself from failing through repeated fast shooting. This is on me but having 3 tubes fail on a multi day shoot was more than even I expected, especially considering the cost and sometimes unavailability of replacement tubes. While I could have replaced a tube from New York within a matter of days, Profoto sales practices prevent them from selling outside the USA and there was not a tube to be had from any dealer in the entire country I was in (according to the Profoto dealership in that country who bent over backwards to help). It is to be hoped the stronger tube in the Pro B3 will assist with this problem in future. The ability to dial the flash down to 0.1 is also appreciated and useful in some situations as is the extra power / not necessarily to use it but to avoid using the flash at full power. The B3 is built like a tank as is expected from Profoto.
