FAQ
We created the D2 to be remarkably fast in every sense.
Freeze the moment
The D2 can provide super quick flash durations up to 1/63,000 of a second. Shoot a splash of water and it will be frozen in mid-air – a photographic work of art.
Catch the moment
The D2 can shoot up to 20 flashes per second. That’s fast enough to catch the best of any moment. Ask your subject to jump and you’ll have 20 mid-air exposures to choose from.
Control your surroundings
Profoto High-Speed Sync (HSS) enables you to shoot with shutter speeds up to 1/8,000 of a second. Use HSS to shoot with large aperture in bright conditions or to freeze action with absolute sharpness.
Shoot with ease using TTL
Point-and-shoot in TTL Mode. Switch to Manual Mode and control the light with intuitive buttons and menus. Forget about the flash and focus on the light.
Overpower any light
The D2 packs enough of punch to overpower the available light in almost any situation. Its power is also a blessing when shooting at larger distances or when using larger Light Shaping Tools.
Catch the moment
The D2 can shoot up to 20 flashes per second. That’s fast enough to catch the best of any moment. Ask your subject to jump and you’ll have 20 mid-air exposures to choose from.
Grow with speed
It has the speed to set you free, and the power for you to be at your best. It’s an integrated part of the extensive Profoto system. Go full speed ahead with the D2.
Yes, the D2 is designed for heavy-duty shooting. Just make sure to update to the high volume quartz flash tube. This flashtube can handle heat more efficiently, which is important when you shoot hard all day long.
The B1X offers cordless freedom and you don’t need to worry about finding electrical supply when you shoot on location. With the D2 you need to have electrical supply or a battery inverter. If you tend to shoot with more lights inside the studio, then the D2 can be a good choice because the D2 and the B1X work perfectly together. The benefit of this is that D2 is available in 1000ws, is faster and also offers more powerful modeling light. A typical set-up could be to use the powerful D2 as a main light (which normally needs more power) and the B1X as fill, rim or background light.
Note: OCF Light Shaping Tools are not compatible with the D2 and should only be used with off-camera flashes.
It depends on what you shoot and also on your future ambitions.
If you shoot fast-moving subjects and need to freeze that movement you should have the D2. It has extremely fast flash duration for freezing action in low light situations and HSS to freeze in bright conditions.
If you shoot in mixed light situations or if you go to places where you can’t control the ambient light you should have the D2 since it offers HSS with full control of ambient light
If you need to get that perfect moment that is only available in a fraction of a second, you should get the D2 since you can shoot up to 20 flashes per second.
If you need very little power (e.g. shooting close to subject, large aperture, high ISO, etc.) the D2 is a better choice since it has a very wide 10 f-stop energy range. With the D2 500 you can go down as low as 1ws!
The D2 has a new and improved cooling fan which is more silent than the D1’s.
If you shoot fast-moving subjects and need to freeze that movement you should have the D2. It has extremely fast flash duration for freezing action in low light situations and HSS to freeze in bright conditions.
If you mainly shoot portraits or still images in a controlled studio environment and don't have any other ambitions, then the D1 could be the choice for you.
Yes, you can use the TTL remote but not in TTL or HSS mode.
If you’re shooting mainly in studio a 500Ws version is great for most shoots, it's an excellent all-round option and a popular choice. The 1000Ws is great for shooting on location outside and when you need enough power to light a bigger area.
You have full control of the ambient light if you, for example, shoot close to windows. With HSS you can kill all ambient light and be in full control with the lighting. There is no need to use ND filters on the camera to control the ambient lighting. If you shoot some type of action in mixed light it is great to use HSS to freeze the movement. Using a regular flash may frequently result in motion blur since the sync is normally not faster than 1/250s.
Yes, you get the new Bag S Plus, a sturdy premium bag. The Bag S Plus can also fit D1/D2/B1 units with the optional glass dome.
Yes, select the special setting menu by pressing the settings button for 3 seconds to display a setting for display orientation.
You can reduce recycling speed of the D2 in the special settings menu to eliminate the problem with the fuses.
