Walk Through a Wedding, Part V: The Guys/Groom Getting Ready

Walk Through a Wedding is a yearlong video series in which we get to follow wedding photographers Justin & Mary Marantz as they set out to capture a young couple’s most special day.

The series consists of 20 videos, each one revealing the story and the lighting setup behind a certain image. This is the fifth video, showing Justin & Mary shooting the groom getting ready.

“Show me a situation where the photographer plan to go all natural light, and I’ll show you the situation where it goes wrong,” says Mary. “That is typically when the guys are getting ready.”

The reason for this is that the guys are often getting ready in a room with no natural light, such as a conference room or a church basement. Justin and Mary solves this problem by bringing in a B1 off-camera flash and a Softbox RFi 2×3′.

“I place the softbox where a window would naturally be,” says Justin. “From there I work around the softbox, from 45° to 90° to 120° angles. During the entire process of getting ready, I never move my light. I just let the action unfold naturally.”

The final shot plus a couple of behind-the-scenes images from the shoot can be found below.

The next video will be released on May 19.
