Edu López’s D2 review: “I could synchronize perfectly at 1/8000s. Yes, that’s right, 1/8000s!”

Estudio Lumina is a Spanish commercial photography studio. They took it upon themselves to try out our new Profoto D2 Monolight. We’ve summarized what photographer Edu López had to say about the world’s fastest monolight with TTL.

You probably know by now that the Profoto D2 has incredible flash duration and recycling time. In his article, Edu López chooses a different angle, describing three additional features he believes are crucial to a successful shoot: TTL, HSS and modeling lights.

Shooting in TTL can save a lot of time, allowing you to focus on the creative aspects of the image rather than the settings. Instead of tinkering with a light meter, you can shoot in TTL mode, switch to manual mode and fine-tune the settings to obtain the perfect image.

“I prefer to devote my attention to the angles, the distance and light shaping than measure the light every time I adjust the focus. That’s what I love about the D2 and TTL,” Edu writes.

Edu López continues to talk about the necessity of HSS.

“I am used to working with large apertures, sometimes to the very limit, and thus it wasn’t possible for me to work with flash because it didn’t let me synchronize over 1/250s. With the Profoto D2, I could synchronize perfectly at 1/8000s.Yes, that’s right, 1/8000s!”

A third important feature for Edu López is the modeling light. The whole idea behind Profoto’s modeling light is what-you-see-is-what-you-get. You will actually get a perfect representation of how the light will look on your image, so much so that you could even shoot using the modeling light alone.

“The modelling light can be set on proportional, free or max. In recent weeks, I’ve set it on max power with an RFi Octa 5’ for newborn sessions. When you work with babies, you can’t use flash because this stuns them. Until now, the solution has been to wait until the right hour of the day to get the light from the sun and use a reflector, or use an LED light that emits an awful light color. Now I have the chance to work with the modeling light and use the different light-shaping tools.”

To really put the D2 to the test, Edu López carried out some dance and portrait shoots on location. You can view more of his images on his blog (text in Spanish).
