Wireless flash triggers
First things first, before any shot can be taken and any Profoto flash can be triggered, you need a Profoto remote. You can view remotes, commonly known as “flash triggers”, as the nerve center of your lighting setup. They enable you to quickly find the correct exposure, remotely control flash settings from any shooting position, and wirelessly trigger your flashes.
All Profoto remotes connect seamlessly to both your camera and Profoto flashes and have an operating range of 100 m (330 ft). You can adjust the flash's power output in a tenth of an F-stop, or in full F-stop increments for any selected group of flashes.
With Air TTL and AirX-enabled remotes and flashes, you can focus fully on the shot rather than your gear. TTL (through the lens) instantly gives you a perfectly exposed image by using your camera’s light metering function. You can also switch from auto to manual mode to change your flash setting.
If you use HSS mode (High-Speed Sync), you can shoot with a wide-open aperture and simultaneously maintain control of your ambient light. This comes in handy on sunny days since you can shape the light at shutter speeds of up to 1/8,000s.

TTL, HSS, Bluetooth, AirX, channels, and groups in flash photography are all expressions that might seem technical, but we promise that using them is actually a piece of cake.
TTL (Through the Lens) is an automatic system that enables your camera to communicate, to the flash, via the remote, which exposure setting is suitable for the scene. When time is limited, or the light conditions constantly change, use AirTTL to get the correct exposure settings automatically.
If you don’t want to fiddle with exposure settings, just switch to manual mode with previous TTL settings intact and fine-tune the exposure until you get it just right.
HSS (High-Speed Sync) enables you to use flash at any shutter speed that goes above normal flash sync speeds. This allows you to use shutter speeds from 1/200 up to 1/8000 of a second, depending on your camera.
With HSS, you can even shape light with large apertures and at fast shutter speeds, for example setting the exposure for a dramatic sky and still getting good exposure on the model as well. HSS is great for outdoor portraits with a shallow depth of field, independent of the weather conditions.
Channels allow you to use your flash without triggering other flashes at the same location. To avoid signal interference with other photographers’ lighting systems at for example a studio, press conferences or public events, simply switch to another channel.
Assign your flashes to various groups to adjust their individual settings from your air remote. For instance, assign your main light to the first group while selecting additional groups for fill lights, hair lights, or background lights.

If you shoot with camera brands that Profoto does not yet support with AirTTL, choose a non-TTL remote instead.
