Legend of Light: Vanessa Joy

Tell us a little about yourself… Who you are, where you’re from, what you shoot/specialize in.

I'm Vanessa Joy, a luxury wedding photographer in NJ and NYC.

How did you get started in photography?

My mother was a photographer so I've been around it my whole life. I didn't start falling in love with it until I was in high school and started shooting weddings for my high school photography teacher's side business. A few years later I went out on my own and the rest is history.

What or who are some of your main influences?

I love looking at fashion and commercial photography, other wedding photographers and true fine art photographers. I can't say I follow a few people - I get inspiration from all around!

When did you start shooting with Profoto?

About five years ago. I was struggling with my current OCF system and Profoto was a breathe of fresh air!

What Profoto gear are you currently using?

Everything! Profoto A1, B1 and B2 for my wedding photography and the D1s for my Headshot Photography studio.

Do you have a favorite lighting setup?

Anything that makes it look like the sunset when it's not. Like what you can see here in the hashtag I started on Instagram - #ItsNotSunItsProfoto!

What is one thing you’re able to do with Profoto lights that you weren’t able to do before?

Control my light. I was always based on natural light, which I don't have control over after the sun sets. I much prefer being in control!

What is the most important piece of advice you’ve received pertaining to photography?

What is your biggest challenge being a wedding photographer? How do you overcome it?

Keeping up with the business side so I stay relevant. It's fun for me, but it's absolutely hard work. I overcome it by continually learning all I can!

What is your dream assignment?

Shooting a wedding in Italy!
