One of the benefits of living and working in south Florida is the availability of a number of colorful locales in which you can take amazing portraits. Fort Lauderdale-based Tom Munoz captured this striking bridal portrait in one of these locales, Vizcaya Gardens, located in Coconut Grove Florida.
Though the sun was shining, the ambient light falling upon the area surrounding the secluded stone sitting area Munoz planned on using for a bridal portrait was in deep shadow. To remedy the problem of the existing flat and less-than-flattering ambient light, Munoz had his assistants set up two lights.
The main light, a Profoto B1 Off-Camera Flash with a Profoto OCF Softbox 2×3’, was set up to the left of the frame at about 2/3 power.
For rim-lighting the bride’s veil and better separate her from her carved stone surroundings, Munoz set up a B2 Off-Camera Flash. Totally compatible with his Profoto B1, the bare-bulb B2 Head was set at low power to compliment the ambient light and placed behind his subject and off to the right side of the frame.
Munoz captured his rather exotic-looking, highly-stylized final image using a Canon EOS 5D Mk III and a Canon EF 70-200mm/f2.8L IS II USM zoom lens. The final exposure was 1/200-second at f/9 with the ISO set to 400. For wirelessly triggering the lights, Munoz mounted a Profoto Air Remote TTL-C onto his camera’s hot shoe.
That was that. Two lights. Two Light Shaping Tools. Easy peasy.
