Meet Legend of Light : Tracie Maglosky

Tell us a little about yourself… Who you are, where you’re from, what you shoot/specialize in.

Hello world! I’m Tracie Maglosky, mom of three teenage boys (yes, I survived!), studio owner with my bestie and hubby. We live just north of Cincinnati in West Chester, Ohio and our studio is directly in the heart of the city in the arts district of Cincinnati. Our studio specializes in wedding photography, maternity and newborn photography. Basically, we love to photograph people and we love watching our families blossom!

For personal projects, I photograph models and dabble in fine art/fashion photography.

How did you get started in photography?

Photography began as a way to catalog my children’s early childhood and quickly became a passion for me. Like most, I started out as a natural light photographer and became keenly aware rather early that even a control freak like me had zero control of the sun. As my passion for photography grew, so did my awareness that I would eventually want all the best tools to bring my visions out of my imagination and into reality.

Who are some of your main influences?

Annie Leibovitz, Anne Geddes and Lou Freeman.

When did you start shooting with Profoto?

My first experience with Profoto was 5 years ago at an event in TX. It was love at first light. Up until then had been using flashes for all of my work and the ease of use, consistency and reliability of Profoto had me hooked immediately. I purchased my first B2 Location Kit shortly thereafter.

What Profoto gear are you currently using?

Currently, I use 2 B2 Location Kits, 2 A1s, a B1X Location kit and all Profoto modifiers (the XL Silver Umbrella with Soft Diffuser being my favorite).

Do you have a favorite lighting setup?

I find myself often shooting against the sun with on-location shoots using a fill and key light. In the studio, I struggle to commit to a favorite because I love to play with different setups so much but if I had to choose, I would say a closed loupe lighting setup is among my favs.

What is one thing you’re able to do with Profoto lights that you weren’t able to do before?

Play. Relax. Trust. I know what I’m going to get with Profoto and I know it’s going to be consistent. Turning light from work to fun was a huge switch for me!

What is the most important piece of advice you’ve received pertaining to photography?

Failure is the path to success. It takes thousands of ok shots to create one EPIC shot. Embracing failure, for sure!

What is your biggest challenge being a wedding and portrait photographer? How do you overcome it?

Time. I need gear that can keep up with me! Inevitably, when hair and makeup is running a little long or the officiant has gone a little over and time is chopped on any given wedding day, the time slice comes out of portrait time. 2 things that ensure success every time — consistent, reliable lighting that doesn’t get in my way and knowing my game plan going in. Btw…the skin exposure feature is genius and the quickest way to get perfect lighting on the go in any situation!

What is your dream assignment?

There are two things that I love…vibrant color and fairy tales. My dream shoot would take place overseas during the lavender season with a medieval castle, gorgeous model and amazing gown involved somehow.
