Meet Legend of Light: Dixie Dixion

Tell us a little about yourself… Who you are, where you’re from, what you shoot/specialize in.

Hellooo there :) I am Dixie Dixon, an advertising and fashion photographer, born in TX.

How did you get started in photography?

Growing up, I had just about every job in photography that I could get my hands on. From little league pictures, to yearbook staff photographer to weddings, products, & portraits. I started my business in college and have been shooting nonstop ever since.

What/who are some of your main influences?

[Richard] Avedon and Annie [Leibovitz] for sure!!

When did you start shooting with Profoto?

I started using Profoto early in my career. Being a non-technical person, I loved how user-friendly it was to use!

What Profoto gear are you currently using?

I love the Profoto B1's for location work and the D1's for studio work and I have a ton of the light shapers- Softlight Reflector (aka the beauty dish), Octa, Strips, Magnum Reflector, and many more

Do you have a favorite lighting setup?

I love a beautiful simple setup such as using the B1 with a beauty dish on location and then backlight from the sun. It is a gorgeous effect!

What is one thing you’re able to do with Profoto lights that you weren’t able to do before?

Travel with lighting gear and not have to plug anything in... its amazing.

What is the most important piece of advice you’ve received pertaining to photography?

Shoot what you love! And only show the type of work you want to shoot!

What is your biggest challenge being a fashion and lifestyle photographer? How do you overcome it?

Balance- it is a tough balance between the business side and creative side of being a commercial photographer. My goal is to always prioritize shooting and outsource as much as the business side as possible- the more I am out there creating work, the happier I am.

What is your dream assignment?

My dream assignment always involves a beach. I just did a dream assignment in Hawaii actually!! Other than that, I always look forward to shooting for my favorite clients/brands!! :)
